The artistic method for chiseling lines in a metal surface or plate with acid for imprinting in the intaglio technique is called "etching". The plate is initially secured with an acid-tolerant ground through which the craftsman makes out the design with a needle or stylus, uncovering the exposed metal underneath. This plate will then be dunked in a corrosive bath that cuts the etched lines into the plate. Etched lines would usually sabotage the subtle movements of the craftsman's fingertips.
