Roosevelt called himself the
ACCIDENTAL PRESIDENT. When President McKinley was assassinated in September
1901, Roosevelt, who was 42 at that time became the United States President and
also the youngest one in history. He led his party and country into the
Progressive Era, and mastered his "Square Deal" domestic policies.
Because of his aim to preserve the resources of the nation, he asked for the
construction of natural parks, forests and monuments, and he also began construction
of the Panama Canal.
