The length of a rectangle is 11 ft less than three times the width, and the area of the rectangle is 70 ft2 . find the dimensions of the rectangle.

L = 3w - 11      where L = length and w =width
also
lw = 70
substituting for l:-
(3w-11)w = 70
3w^2 - 11w - 70 = 0
(3w   + 10  )(w -  7) = 0

w = 7 or -10/3  (ignore the negative root)

So the width is 7 and the length  =  = 70/w 70/7 = 10
