Monotremes are the mammalian group that lay eggs. These mammals are considered to be primitive since they are like the birds and reptiles who lay eggs instead of live birth. There are only five known species of this group of mammals namely the duck billed platypus and the four species of spiny anteaters. All of these mammals can only be found in New Guinea and Australia. Although they lay eggs, the female monotreme would still nurse their babies with milk the same with any other mammals. Monotremes are considered to be warm-blooded having metabolic rate that is high and have body hair.
