John Dean was White House Counsel (1970-1973) under Richard Nixon, was partially responsible for attempting to cover up information during the Watergate Scandal, was convicted of felonies for his role in that coverup.
Dean studied at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, after which he transferred to the College of Wooster in Ohio, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1961. In 1965, he graduated with a law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He initially started working for a law company in Washington, D.C., and from 1966 to 1967 he was the House Judiciary Committee's main minority (Republican) counsel. He accepted a position as an associate deputy attorney general in the Nixon administration after serving for two years as the assistant director of the National Commission on Reform of Federal Criminal Laws. Dean was chosen by the president to serve as White House attorney in 1970.
