Jefferson was a little hesitant and worrisome at first because the constitution did not specifically give the president the authority to claim more territory, and he really considered it. But Napoleon was becoming impatient with Jefferson and even threatened to void the treaty! Eventually though, Jefferson did go along and buy the land, which is a part of the U.S. today.
