What are some of the harmful effects of adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere?

It is a greenhouse gas. It absorbs heat. So, if its amount is large in the atmosphere then the atmosphere will heat up leading to global warming. Global warming can increase sea level, submerging the coastal areas.

Carbon dioxide increases temperatures, extending the growing season and increasing humidity. Both factors have led to some additional plant growth. However, warmer temperatures also stress plants. With a longer, warmer growing season, plants need more water to survive
