The Spanish had originally found Louisiana, but the French had named it, and made the first settlement, Fort Maurepas, in 1699. In 1763, the Spanish made claim to Louisiana, in a fight to get a piece of the New World. Napoleon got back Louisiana in 1800 through a treaty, but ended up withdrawing by 1803 due to a revolution occurring in Haiti. Louisiana (New France at the time) was sold to the upcoming Unites States of America.  Louisiana was divided into two, and eventually became a state in 1812. There was a large population of Haitian immigrants due to the Haitian Revolution, and a large amount of Cubans who also came in. There was also an influx of Creoles. This led to a French-speaking community, who built the state and set a structure during the beginning years.
