Allan built a processing plant near its mines at kirkvine, Manchester, and in early 1953 began shipping alumina, the intermediate product between the ore and the metal. Production increased rapidly and by 1957 Jamaica had become the number one bauxite producer in the world with nearly five million tones,almost a quarter of all the bauxite mined in the world in that year.
