The united nations come from its predecessor, the league of nations, which was created after world war I to make sure another world war would never happen again. Sadly not everyone supported the League of nations so it was disbanded. It took another world war for all the nations to form a United Nations. Again its main purpose is to make sure a world war doesn't happen again and that nations can solve things in a calm manner.
