The author wants readers to understand that a black hole isn’t really just a hole it more than that.You cant really see black holes in space with out special materials but there is one way you can tell if a black hole is there.If a star gets sucked into a black hole because of how strong the gravity is in the middle,then it leaves a trace of light which is how scientists detect black holes in space.

What is a black hole?

For generations, people have imagined a vast, dense object in space from which no light could escape. Einstein's theory of general relativity famously predicted black holes.

The black hole absorbs all light beams that fall on it. We can't see this star because of this, but we can certainly see a little black hole in its place. The life of a star is a never-ending battle with gravity. Gravity is always attempting to bring the star down.
