In order to understand deception in academia, researchers conducted an experiment in which student participants were asked to request an extension on an exam from their respective professors. The students were assigned to one of three conditions describing the reason for needing the extension: (1) the student was not feeling well after drinking too much, (2) the student was recently at the hospital with the flu, or (3) the student was anxious about balancing too much work.
