Organized crime in America was the effect of prohibition. The 18th amendment of 1920 prohibited the manufacture, transport and sale of intoxicating liquor within America. This decision was taken due to the pressure from the parts of religion as well as women who believed that liquor was the root cause of distress in their families.
Before prohibition mobsters of the country were part of small gangs and didn’t have much influence. They served powerful politicians and weren’t at the head of organized crime. After prohibition the mobsters took to illegal production of liquor and became rich because there was high demand for alcohol in the country.
Later on gangs started tying up with each other and it gave rise to a powerful underworld where the mobsters were the masters and politicians took orders from them.
