What is ecological succession?
Ecological Succession refers to the gradual changes that occurs in a habitat such that with time new species are able to live one habitat where they were not previously found until a stable community is established.
Ecological Succession can occur where there were initially no species, such as a bare rock and this is known as primary succession.
Succession can also occur in previously established habitat whereby new organisms replace the original colonizers of the habitat.
The stages of ecological succession are:
- formation of a bare area
- invasion,
- competition and coaction,
- reaction and
- stabilization
Therefore, ecological succession occurs as gradual process until a climax community is established.
