At the time when Sir Stamford Raffles came, there were less than one hundred small houses and huts at the mouth of the river; but the Temenggong's house was the only large one. About thirty families of Orang Laut also lived in boats a little way up the Singapore Rive. There were a few more who lived nearer to the mouth of the river, their huts facing the seas.
