ALI KAZMA IN NEW YORK /

IN IT, an exhibition of works by Ali Kazma, will be on view at gallery C24 in New York from November 7th through December 22nd, 2012. Opening reception on Wednesday, November 7th from 6 – 8pm. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in New York and is curated by French writer, historian and philosopher Paul Ardenne. A conversation with the artist, the curator and Barbara Polla, managing editor for In It, the book that has been published for the show, will be held on Thursday, November 8th at 7pm at the gallery. The book presents writings by Paul Ardenne and an extended conversation between the curator and the artist.

Ali Kazma’s videos raise fundamental questions about the significance of human activity, labor, the meaning of economy, production, and social organization. They also address the ethical questions of the status of images, their (non)-proliferation, and the fundamental questions of energy, time and space. How do our past and present design our future? How do we “obstruct” the passing of time?

For IN IT, Paul Ardenne has selected two new two-channel videos not seen before in the United States, together with older works by Ali Kazma that were pivotal to his practice. Ardenne’s selection will provide a unique view of the artist’s work, focused on the concept of “energy.” Bringing together these videos in concert, the viewer will see Kazma’s artistic exploration into the various rhythms energy manifests, whether slow, fast, frantic or suddenly disrupted. His imagery calibrates the course of time and gives rhythm to human gestures, whether they are mechanical movements, or the growth of nature around us.
